“Two teachers. Two languages. One community of learners.”
DLI AT PARKVIEW
Two-Way Dual Language Immersion Program
At Parkview Elementary, our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program provides a dynamic and enriching bilingual experience for young learners at a stage when their brains are most receptive to acquiring a second language through engaging, real-world contexts.
Over the course of six years, students in the program grow into confident bilingual communicators. Research shows that immersion students often develop stronger cognitive flexibility, improved memory, greater attention control, and enhanced problem-solving skills. Additionally, they gain a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and global perspectives.
Parkview’s two-way DLI program brings together a balanced mix of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers. Each group serves as both language models and learners, learning from and with one another in a collaborative environment. Instruction is delivered by two dedicated, certified teachers—one teaching exclusively in English and the other solely in Spanish—using the district’s approved curriculum.
Students spend half of their day learning in English, where instruction includes reading, writing, and elements of core content like science, math, and social studies. The other half of the day is conducted entirely in Spanish, with a focus on Spanish literacy, mathematics, and other academic areas. The Spanish-speaking teacher uses immersive, interactive methods such as songs, visuals, movement, and storytelling to support language development. Starting in second grade, students are expected to respond only in Spanish during Spanish instruction, further strengthening their language skills.
